If you’ve ever looked at “watercolor” tattoo images- there is a good chance you’ve probably stumbled upon Austin West’s work.
Officially kicking off her career in 2008, Austin has been drawing and painting for quite some time. However, her interest in tattoos became a reality when she was only 14, when a childhood friend asked her to draw him a tattoo design.
But even before that experience, Austin always had a passion for art — from drawing scribbles of animals on her bedroom walls, to eventually studying and majoring in Visual Arts at the Las Vegas Academy — artwork, in all of its forms, has been a major driving and motivating factor in her life.
One of her most powerful memories of being exposed to mainstream and modern female tattoo artists was when she watched Hannah Aitchison and Kim Saigh on LA Ink. Being a strong woman herself, you can see how her art style is reflected by an ethereal sense of beauty, strength, dreams, and nature in her tattoos.
“My tattoos are delicate and soft, and I specialize in “watercolor tattoos”. Think vintage botanical illustrations with an obvious appeal to a feminine design. When I paint, I find beauty in longing and the animals I paint are often described as looking sorrowful, but I would consider them to be more romantic. I am a bit obsessed with making animals out of flowers.”
You can even find one of her tattoos featured in the “Feathers of Inspiration” book, which is one of the many books in the Out of Step series.
When Austin isn’t tattooing, she’s spending time with her son- who has quite large and endeavours dreams of his own! Even though he’s still young, his sense of passion and drive comes right from his mother’s own influence.
